[HOW-TO] Install CoD4X

Question

Before you install CoD4X, you have to update your game to the latest official version, which is 1.7.

If you own the Steam version, this is already done for you. Otherwise, please follow the instructions below.

Update the game to 1.7

  1. Download the 1.6 and 1.7 patches from here
  2. Install the 1.6 patch first as administrator
  3. Install the 1.7 patch as administrator
  4. Launch the game and check in the bottom right corner if 1.7 is displayed

Once you've done that, you can continue installing CoD4X.

Install CoD4X (1.8)

  1. Download CoD4X from here
  2. Extract the zip file to your Cod4 installation directory
  3. Enter the extracted folder
  4. Run install.cmd. You might have to run it as administrator
  5. Launch the game and check in the bottom right corner if CoD4X is displayed

Uninstall CoD4X

  1. Enter the extracted folder
  2. Run uninstall.cmd. You might have to run it as administrator

And if it's not going open-source, it probably never will. The developers currently don't have not enough interest to support it, and it's too much work.

The image clearly shows you didn't. You placed the uncompressed folder to C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision instead. Please move it to the Call of Duty 4 folder and then try again.

Any chance you're Windows username contains a space for some reason?

Well the script does seem to think it's 2 different things so if you can, yes please change the username to be without a space. That would be preferred at all times anyway, since it'll give trouble with more stuff.

Or only with that script. I don't understand much from Windows shell...

I do not understand it really either. On *nix you would just add quotes (") around the path and it would work fine, not sure if that works on Windows as well.

An installation guide for macOS you mean? A native version will not come, not anytime soon anyway. Installation in Wine is possible, but the Steam dependency makes it a bit of a hassle.

It can still be done though, maybe I'll just make a guide this week.

COD4 for mac  is not available at Steam

Actually, it is:

QmXpyB7KqsKtJt6WozbwRCYh48ybEEhKJVvGrU5P6MtkQZ

Do you see the Apple logo?

I created a quick guide for now. I'm a Linux user myself so it's mostly focused on Linux right now, and using the Steam version. It should however be straight forward to adapt this to macOS (it's mostly just changing the directories really). I'll look into getting hold of a Mac temporarily to adapt the guide to macOS as well (why can't I just install it easily in a VM Apple?!).

Note that you can not use the Apple store version, as you will need the Windows files. The Apple store doesn't provide these, so you'll either have to buy it from Steam (which can then also be played on macOS, but without CoD4X), or get the disc version for Windows.

Ohh maybe the time which I was trying to purchase it for Mac was not available at seam which really annoyed me because the Steam support is really good but Mac App Store is kind of different (since it is for all kind of stuffs like apps game and so on but steam is focused on Games only).

And sorry I can not understand this part : "(which can then also be played on macOS, but without CoD4X)"

You mean I would be able to play in servers which are using COD4i mod using the Steam version ?

Thank you

No I mean you can use the macOS version from Steam, with which you can play regular Cod4. But you can not use Cod4X (and not join servers that run it), as it's not compatible with macOS.

So you'll have to use the Windows version in Wine if you want to run Cod4X.

thank you for the reply,

So at the moment there is no way for a MacPowered machine to use COD4 with Cod4x ...

Unfortunately Wine is not really reliable and I have not had a good experience with it.

I hope you would make this mode compatible with Mac as well....

Thank you again

I'm not the developer, so I can't, sorry. I would make it Linux compatible as well as I could, as that's the OS I use. There just aren't enough Mac or Linux players right now in Fraggy and D4edalus opinions.

Maybe the install script doesn't accept some Polish characters? Shouldn't really matter though, it just searches 1 folder up in the directory tree, which is still English.
